Fur Revival

Fur Revival

If you haven’t noticed more fur coats and jackets being worn on the streets this winter, you only have to open almost any popular social media app today, like Instagram or TikTok to see that there is definitely a vintage fur revival happening.  Last year, thanks to the  “mob wives” trend, we started to see more young people wearing furs and had more requests for vintage furs than ever before.  This year the trend has held up, and we are getting inquiries daily and selling vintage furs regularly.  We are also hearing people, women and men, young and old, saying, “I love fur!”.

Incredibly, after about a 30-year slump in people wearing their furs, largely out of fear that someone with a sense of moral superiority will say something rude, fur is now very much back on the rise.  Mostly it is the young women in their 20’s and 30’s leading the charge, and we are seeing more and more celebrities sporting vintage and designer fur pieces with pride.

I am hearing people talk about the long lasting, natural, warm, locally-made qualities of their heirloom furs.  All qualities that astute consumers are looking for, as they move away from fast fashion, synthetic-based clothing that has proven to be a major factor in environmental toxicity, from CO2 emissions, micro-plastics in the water supply, or piles and piles of synthetic clothing in landfills that will never break down.  Young consumers are looking at the second hand and vintage clothing market, which is now the fastest growing category in fashion, as their way to contribute to sustainability.

When it comes to vintage, people are buying a range of fur types, styles, and lengths. What is currently leading the charge is full length blue fox or silver fox coats from the 1980’s, fur and leather belted coats from the 1970’s, and little brown mink or muskrat jackets from the 1960’s-1990’s.  These beautiful period pieces sell for a fraction of their original price, so they are getting exceptional value, if they buy correctly.  I wrote a blog in February of 2024, titled “Do not buy a vintage fur until  you read this!” to educate people on how to buy vintage fur wisely and not buy a piece that is falling apart.

We are always happy to hear from people interested in vintage furs.  You can see many of our refurbished vintage coats and jackets on our website, or you are welcome to make appointments to shop the vault, where we have hundreds more that are not yet catalogued.  We probably have the largest collection of vintage furs in Canada.

Sustainability is all about using what we have, repurposing what we have, and going natural.  Enjoy your furs!

Due to the renewed demand for vintage furs, we will be recommencing our Vintage Fur ID Series, beginning with fox next week.
