The Predator Pro Podcast

Little did I know that at the beginning of this week, I would be the guest on a popular podcast and YouTube channel to talk about the international fur markets. I was contacted by Geoff Nemnich, of the Predator Pro Podcast out of Nebraska, that focuses on predator management in the US and Canada, mainly coyote, to give a perspective on the process to get the fur to market after the animals are harvested, and what factors influence price and demand. Geoff contacted me based on my previous position as Senior Vice-President of International Marketing at North American Fur Auctions (NAFA), which was the extension of the original HBC fur trading company, or more accurately, Company of Adventurers Trading into Hudson’s Bay. Sadly, NAFA went into creditor protection in 2019 and ceased operations in 2020, and now we see the HBC is again in the news for creditor protection of the esteemed retail operation. Sad all around.
It was really a pleasure to speak with Geoff about my 25 year international fur career, spanning the days learning to make fur garments with my older brother Jamie, from our Dad (Bernie Cahill) to the height of the fur trade in the 1980s, to the decline that followed, due to economic, social and societal shifts. We also had a broader discussion on international trade, animal welfare, wildlife management, the Russian fur market in the 1990s, the Chinese and Korean markets, and high fashion houses of Europe and North America in the 2010s.
We also talk about the current shifting social and economic trends that are seeing a resurgence in the demand for fur in vintage and fashion settings, as high quality, natural materials, local production, and longevity are important factors in current buying habits.
I hope you enjoy listening to the podcast or watching the YouTube video/podcast as much as I enjoyed the conversation with Geoff.
Happy to hear from you, what you thought, and any questions you may have.
Cheers,
Rob Cahill
