Further Consultation Process

If you have a vintage or heirloom fur that you are interested in upcycling, you can make an appointment with us for a free, no commitment consultation. In-person consultations are best if possible so that you get the full tactile experience. If that is not possible, we can set up a video consultation so you can see your options before sending your furs to us in the post.

This is what to expect from our consultation process:

Fur Identification

If you do not know what kind of fur your have, or what era a coat may be from, we can help you identify this. You can also check out our Fur ID Series on our blog if you'd like to try this yourself.

Quality Evaluation

We will have to check the condition of the pelts (the underside of the fur) to ensure they are strong enough to remake into a new garment or home decor piece. If they are dry and beginning to rip, they can almost always be made into knits, so you still have options. If the leather is strong, the fur can be remade into almost anything.

Options & Luxury Finishes

We will explore the options you are most interested in--including pillows, throw blankets, teddy bears, accessories, vests, capes, and coats which can be fur-out, fur-lined, or reversible, depending on the style and fur type. From here you will get to choose backing options for pillows and throws, or linings and shell materials for garments. For backings, we have a variety of wools or cashmere & wool blends, or the extra luxurious camel hair or pure Loro Piana Italian cashmere. For garments, we offer water-resistant taffeta, cashmere, Loro Piana Storm System cashmere, wool gaberdine, and silk or satin linings. There are also a variety of fasteners and trims, and other small details you can customize. We also may recommend shearing of the fur to make it lighter and softer. This will depend on your personal preference, the fur, and the project you choose.

Measuring & Fittings

If you choose to upcycle your fur into a garment, we will need to take your measurements in order to ensure proper fit. If you are not able to make an in-person appointment, we will walk you through the measurements required.

For garments with a liner or shell, we will have a first fitting once the fur work is done. We will have you try on the garment, so we can determine if any adjustments are necessary. If we make adjustments, you may have another fitting before we make the liner or shell. You will have a final fitting once we have completed the garment. At this point, you may take it home or leave it here in climate-controlled storage until winter.

This may sound like a lot, but it is pretty straight forward and an interesting process to better understand the furs you have and the many options they can be transformed into.

Contact us if you would like to book an appointment.

The entire upcycling process typically takes a minimum of 6-8 weeks. You may wish to begin in the warmer parts of the year if you would like your furs ready for winter. Expect to make a 50% deposit once you confirm your project.
