Yukon tundra is a treeless biome supporting a variety of beautiful mosses, lichens, herbs and shrubs. As Autumn approaches and the aurora borealis season begins, the air becomes crisper and the tundra erupts in a riot of colour. Shades of red, yellow and white mix with the many shades of green to create a festive tapestry on the hills and in the valleys.
Things to do in the Yukon:
- Hike or take a helicopter tour into the into the beautiful landscape of Tombstone. Make sure you go to the visitor to check weather and hiking conditions before you head out
- Drive the Dempster Highway from Dawson City north to the Arctic circle and beyond. Colours change early in the tundra so late August is a good time. Watch the weather reports for snow. Alternatively, you can drive to the most Northern Canada/US Border along the spectacular Top of the World Highway.
- The lakes and streams have the freshest water in the country. Try you hand a fly fishing, river rafting, or just enjoy an icy dip by your campsite.
